| Thomas Mark Harmon nasce a Burbank, California il 2 Settembre 1951, figlio di Tom Harmon e Elyse Knox .
Ha due sorelle maggiori Kristin e Kelly.
Dopo aver frequentato il Los Angeles Pierce College Mark si trasferisce all' University of California, Los Angeles dove segue le orme del padre giocando come quarterback per l' UCLA Bruins nel 1972 e nel 1973.
Ha ricevuto il National Football Foundation Award for All-Round Excellence nel 1973. Si e' diplomato nel 1974 cum laude in Comunicazioni.
Carriera
Il suo primo ruolo come attore e' come guest-star in un episodio di "Adam-12" and "905- Wild". Nel 1979, ha
recitato nella serie d'azione " 240-Robert " nella parte del deputato Dwayne Thibideaux.
Dopo alcuni anni di partecipazioni come attore non protagonista in alcune serie tv, ottiene il suo primo ruolo imprtante nel 1980 nella soap opera in primetime Flamingo dove interpreta Fielding Carllisle. Dopo la cancellazione della serie, nel 1983 ottiene il ruolo del Dr. Robert Caldwell nella prestigiosa serie NBC St. Elsewhere. Nel 1986 lascia la serie e partecipa aquattro episodi di Moonlighting nel 1987. Dal 1991 al 1993 interpreta il detective Dickie Cobb della polizia di Chigago nella serie NBC Reasonable Doubts.
Partecipa anche a Charlie Grace, serie dell' ABC duratauna sola stagione.
Dal 1996 al 2000 ha il ruolo del Dr Jack McNeil nella serie Chicago Hope.
Nel Maggio 2002 ha un ruolo di quattro episodi come l'Aagente Speciale dei servizi segreti Simon Donovan in The West Wing. Nel 2003 la partecipazione in due episodi della serie JAG nel ruolo dell'Agente Speciale Gibbs dell' NCIS . Dal 2003 e' appunto l'Agente Speciale dell' NCIS Leroy Jethro Gibbs nella serie CBS NCIS.

Mark e' stato nominato agli Emmy come Outstanding Guest Actor nella serie drammatica "The West Wing" , ha ricevuto tre nominations ai Golden Globe per i ruoli in "Reasonable Doubts" in "After the Promise" e in "The Deliberate Stranger" nel ruolo del seriel Killer Ted Bundy.
Ha ricevuto anche due SAG Award nominations per "Chicago Hope".
Mark e' sposato dal 21 Marzo 1987 all'attrice Pam Dawber dalla quale ha avuto due figli Sean Thomas Harmon(nato il 25 aprile 1988) che ha recitato nell'episodio 4 della 6° Stagione nel ruolo di Gibbs giovane e Ty Christian Harmon (nato il 25 giugno 1992).
Nel 1996, Mark ha salvato due ragazzi coinvolti in un incidente di macchina davanti alla sua casa. Usando un martello per rompere il finestrino della loro auto in fiamme, salvandoli dalle stesse fiamme.
Nel 1986 People lo ha proclamato l'uomo piu' sexy del mondo.
