There are a few things I’ve learned after being on the show for more than a year. I’ve learned these scripts never get easier to write. I’ve learned never to trust anything Steve Binder says (biggest prankster on staff… just ask Frank Cardea). And I’ve learned that there really is a TV “casting god”. In this episode, that god was shining on us happily.
When word got out that we’d landed the great Lily Tomlin for the role of “Penelope Langston” there were high-fives and applause all around. (Not to mention a few crew members hitting Ebay to snap up old memorabilia for her to sign.) We were jubilant, to put it mildly. And, we soon learned, so was Lily. She was excited and engaged from the very beginning. Completely gracious and kind, she knew everyone’s name on day one. And oh yeah, she was brilliant and funny on every take. Everyone just fell in love with her. Including our equally brilliant and funny cast. Mark Harmon, Michael Weatherly, and Cote de Pablo had great fun in their scenes with her. But the connection we really needed to work – the one that would “sell” the whole episode – was the one between Sean Murray and Lily Tomlin. Luckily, they bonded right away. There wasn’t a moment where we didn’t buy them in this complex, sweet grandson-grandmother relationship.
The perfect captain of this ship was none other than Arvin Brown. Working with Arvin is like working with American theater and television royalty. He literally knows everyone, and everyone knows him. Apparently, Lily had known of Arvin for many years (from his days running the famed Long Wharf Theatre in Connecticut) and was eager to work with him. She felt immediately comfortable and at ease. In fact, all of our actors feel that way about Arvin. He truly is an “actor’s director,” and the scenes between McGee and Penny are among my favorite.
As always, I’d like to give HUGE thanks to the best crew in the business. They make coming to the set every day (so early!) more fun that it should be. And, of course, to our incredible fans – Thank you! You keep us striving to take you places we haven’t before. Now sit back, relax, grab your beverage of choice and enjoy “The Penelope Papers.”
